One of the clients I have been working has just adopted Sharepoint as a long-term portal strategy (not to be confused with content management which dotnetnuke currently fills in that organisation).

An interesting selling point of Sharepoint is webparts. Webparts are similar to modules, in that they are a standard specification for wrapping up a piece of logic. Other platforms call them portlets and so forth. Currently, I think webparts are only used on MS based portals, while portlets are a J2EE standard to be used with the equivalent portal frameworks (correct me if I am wrong).

Conveniently, one of the exciting new features for ASP.NET 2, is the ability to easily write web parts (it is possible in ASP.NET 1.0, but a little harder). So obviously, one of the challenges for the dotnetnuke project would be to try and incorporate support for webparts.

Dan Caron been diving into this area as part of our investigation into ASP.NET 2 and has published a series of blog posts discussing possible approaches:-

Thank you for sharing Dan!
